Edward Truong Takes First Place at 2025 WACRA EMCR Symposium

It’s a standout achievement for Edward, who won first place in the student category at the 2025 WACRA (Western Australian Cardiovascular Research Alliance) EMCR Symposium. This is an exceptional milestone in a highly competitive field.

This success was made possible through the support of the 2024/25 Data Institute Summer Program Research Grants, whose investment continues to empower emerging researchers to push boundaries and deliver real-world impact. We are incredibly proud of Edward’s dedication and grateful for the Institute’s ongoing partnership.

Turning Complex AI Into Clinician-Friendly Insight
Edward’s award-winning research tackles a major challenge in medical AI: the “black box” problem. While advanced models can predict cardiovascular disease outcomes with impressive accuracy, their inner workings can be difficult for non-expert clinicians to interpret.

Edward’s project bridges this gap by harnessing large language models—specifically MedGemma—to generate consultant-style medical reports. These reports translate complex machine learning outputs into clear, structured, and clinically familiar explanations.

The result?

  • AI that’s easier for clinicians to use, even without technical expertise
  • Greater trust in machine-learning-driven insights
  • A meaningful step toward integrating AI tools into everyday clinical practice

This work exemplifies the powerful intersection of data science and healthcare—exactly the kind of innovation the Data Institute seeks to champion.
