Congratulations to UWA Data Institute Research Committee Member Associate Professor Ed Cripps, who is part of a successful ARC Linkage Project set to strengthen the future of global clean energy infrastructure.
Working alongside industry partners Aurora Offshore Engineering Pty Ltd, Nexans, and Jan De Nul, the project will develop advanced models to improve the reliability of subsea High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) cable bundles, a critical technology increasingly used in offshore wind farms and international energy interconnectors.
The research aims to address a major knowledge gap in understanding how ocean currents and waves interact with HVDC cable bundles resting on the seabed. Through a combination of physical experiments, numerical modelling, and Gaussian emulation, the team will generate high-quality data to better quantify hydrodynamic forces and cable behaviour in challenging marine environments.
The resulting insights are expected to inform new design guidelines for subsea HVDC infrastructure, helping reduce costs, improve reliability, and futureproof thousands of kilometres of underwater cables connecting Australia and the world to cleaner energy sources.
This important collaboration highlights the growing role of data-driven modelling and interdisciplinary research in supporting the global transition to sustainable energy systems.
