Professor Melissa Penny, UWA Data Institute Research Committee Member Leads Global Malaria Research Efforts Following AUD $7.3 Million Gates Foundation Investment

The global effort to eliminate malaria received a significant boost this week, with the Gates Foundation announcing more than AUD $7.3 million in new funding to support a groundbreaking collaboration between The Kids Research Institute Australia and The University of Western Australia.

This investment directly supports the world-leading Global Disease Modelling team, led by Professor Melissa Penny. The teams’ work plays a vital role in shaping how nations, NGOs and global health organisations respond to malaria, a disease that continues to claim hundreds of thousands of young lives every year.

Powering Next-Generation Malaria Solutions
With this new funding, the research team will advance two critical areas:

  • Enhancing OpenMalaria, an advanced simulation platform that models how malaria spreads and how it may respond to new interventions. Strengthening this platform allows researchers and policymakers to test strategies virtually—before they are rolled out in vulnerable communities.
  • Modelling next-generation vaccines and treatments, enabling scientists to evaluate the potential impact of new tools long before they enter clinical trials. This work is essential for accelerating the deployment of effective solutions and ensuring resources are directed where they will save the most lives.

This announcement reinforces UWA’s growing reputation as an international leader in infectious disease modelling and evidence-based health innovation. Professor Penny is also a valued member of the UWA Data Institute Research Committee.
