The latest UWA Data Institute Research Bytes brought together three very different research stories, each demonstrating how data, computational approaches and emerging technologies are opening up new ways to tackle complex real-world problems.

Dr Cornelia Hooper provided an insight into the world of plant science and genomics, showcasing the work her team is undertaking and the insights that can emerge when biological research is combined with large-scale data and computational science. From practical applications to complex genomic questions, the presentation highlighted the breadth of possibilities at the intersection of biology and data — with Western Australian kangaroo paw making a welcome appearance along the way.

Dr Thomas Stemler demonstrated just how widely data and mathematical modelling can be applied, taking the audience across a diverse range of research projects. From transport and traffic systems to climate and ocean dynamics, his presentation explored how data, mathematical modelling and machine learning can be used to better understand complex systems and address problems across very different fields.

The session concluded with Parmida Ghorbanian, winner of the UWA Data Institute’s 2026 Postgraduate Student Researcher Pitch. Parmida shared her research into using deep learning and retinal imaging to identify cardiovascular disease risk, highlighting the potential for AI and medical imaging to support new approaches to disease detection.

From research presentations to new connections

While the presentations provided an opportunity to discover new research, some of the most valuable conversations continued afterwards during the networking session.

Researchers, students and industry representatives connected over potential research collaborations, opportunities to work with researchers, possible industry applications and the diverse range of data-driven research taking place across The University of Western Australia.

Creating these connections is central to Research Bytes. By bringing different areas of research and different parts of the UWA community together, the series provides an opportunity to discover new ideas, explore shared interests and identify where research connections might lead.

Thank you to Cornelia, Thomas and Parmida for sharing their research, and to everyone who joined us and contributed to the conversations.

Research Bytes will return for another session of research, ideas and connections across UWA.
